Hygge and Home
Home not selling? Call Magnolia for a full reset.
September home sales are starting to slow now that school started and Fall and Winter are on their way. Learn all about hygge and how we create cozy staging to set your home above any others.
What is Hygge?
The simplified English pronunciation is “Hooga.” Also known in Dutch as gezellig, Dutch, Norwegian, and Swedish cultures know how to make a space feel cozy, welcoming, and memorable. Thanks to the blustery northwestern ocean winds throughout winter and spring, we know how to make something cozy out of nothing.
We’re sharing a few of the techniques savvy restaurants and retailers use to set the stage for their customers, with advice customized specifically for open houses and scheduled home tours.
Heating
Turn on the in-floor heating, if available. Warm toes make for a warm heart, and warm hearts make offers. Turn on your gas fireplaces, too. There is nothing better than potential buyers being greeted by cozy warmth.
Lighting
Leave the lights on. Don't ask the realtor to turn off the lights in your realtor remarks. You might have back-to-back showings, and you don't want the next tour to start in a spooky, dimly lit house.
Add a few battery-operated flameless candles in the living room, along with a fall wreath, a cozy blanket, and a stack of books on the tables.

Scents
If you have wall-to-wall carpeting, the best-case scenario is to have your carpets professionally deep-cleaned. But if that is not possible, a sprinkle of carpet deodorizer the day before can make all the difference.
A spritz of fresh linen spray on towels, closets, bedding, and furniture can also give the home a welcoming atmosphere.

Snacks
Sugar and spice make everything nice. Pick up an inexpensive water dispenser with a water spigot and make cinnamon-infused apple juice with rosemary sprigs, or serve an easy warmed cinnamon apple tea in the dispenser and decorate with a few apple slices and cinnamon sticks. Add some festive fall disposable cups and let buyers linger in the kitchen for a bit.

Set the Mood
Have background music playing. Set up a few remote speakers around the home if you don't have a built-in speaker system throughout. You can even play the same music on each TV so that, as potential buyers move through your home, they are serenaded with sweet melodies.
